Pandora, the Witch of Vainglory is the most mysterious and terrible characters of Re:Zero. - Immortality: Pandora cannot be permanently killed; she simply re-emerges after her supposed death.
- Control Over Mabeasts: She has led the venomous Mabeasts called White Whale and Black Snake
- Memory Sealing: In past, she had sealed memories on Emilia in Elior Forest.
- Puppet Generation: She can create weaklings with puppet versions of people – Kurgan and Theresia van Astrea are one of these.
Pandora’s lack of basic human emotions further emphasizes her cruelty. She is willing to do anything to achieve her goals, including manipulating and killing without remorse.
Pandora’s Connection with Emilia
Pandora’s connection with Emilia is one of tragedy and trauma, shaping much of Emilia’s backstory and character development.
Theory: Pandora Killed Emilia’s Parents
The third and most crucial indication that Pandora was involved in the killing of Emilia’s parents occurs in Season 2, Episode 43. This climactic moment features the fight between Pandora and Emilia’s Aunt Fortuna in Elior Forest, as Fortuna, out of rage, yells to Pandora,
“Pandora! Enjoy being skewered, and apologize to my brother and his wife!”
That is very strong evidence of the involvement of Pandora in killing Emilia’s father and mother.
This incident occurred in Elior Forest when Pandora came for opening the seal. But that’s the reason she encounters Emilia for the first time. This makes Pandora the cause of Emilia’s suffering and isolation in her early years.

This manipulation also reveals further cruelty of Pandora and exploitation of Emilia for her gain, like trying to opening the seal in the forest.
Role of Pandora for Emilia’s Future
Creator Tappei Nagatsuki said that villains in Re:Zero are there to be defeated. Many fans believe that Emilia will finally face Pandora in the final battle, avenging her parents and healing herself from the trauma Pandora gave to her.
How Pandora Affects the Plot
Aside from her role with Emilia, the actions of Pandora have big implications in the Re:Zero world. She appears twice in the main plotline:
- Attack on the Elior Forest: About 100 years before Subaru’s arrival, Pandora led the attack involving the Black Snake, which resulted in the destruction of the forest and the death of Emilia’s loved ones.
- Subjugation of the White Whale: 14 years before Subaru’s arrival, Pandora was involved in the death of Theresia van Astrea during the subjugation of the White Whale.
These occurrences make Pandora become the one of the central villain, perhaps the last enemy whom Subaru and his friends need to defeat.
Pandora goes way beyond being a strong Witch. Her direct and indirect impacts on Emilia’s life were tremendous, causing her immense sufferings and paving the path for the final confrontation.
